Com. Binoy Viswam's Letter to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal
Shri. Piyush Goyal
Hon. Minister for Commerce and Railways
Government of India
Respected Piyush Goyalji,
Sub: Plea to initiate urgent meeting of the Parliament to discuss RCEP
On behalf of millions and millions of dairy farmers of India, through this letter I urge upon you to desist from the ongoing negotiation related to Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). I wonder how a Government that speaks a lot about nationalism and national interests could go ahead with such a negotiation that is detrimental to the foundations of national interest. It is common knowledge that dairy farming is the means of livelihood for more than 75 million families and is the backbone of rural economy in many states including Gujarat. According to official statistics itself dairy industry contributes 4.6% in the GVA of the country. The government move to enter a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with 16 countries would be proven as a blow to the Indian economy which is going through grave crisis.
The proposed FTA covers not only dairy sector. It will have its negative impact on other sectors in the manufacturing and agriculture like metal industries, pepper, cardamom, rubber, coconut etc. People of India would naturally ask that when countries like USA are madly following protectionism why our country chooses to forget its people and its economy.
All these are happening without proper consultation with the stakeholders. The parliament is again kept in dark. I may ask you to take steps for holding an urgent session of the parliament before the Winter Session exclusively to discuss the impact of RCEP on India.
Hope to hear from you.
