Comrade (Dr) Souribandhu Kar is No More


The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement today (on April 14, 2020) condoling the death former National Council member and eminent trade union leader Comrade Souribandhu Kar:


Prominent Communist Party of India leader and eminent trade union leader Comrade Dr Souribandhu Kar passed away on April 13, 2020 at 10 pm. He was under treatment for sometime at KIMS Hospital, Bhubaneswar. He was suffering from lever siriasis and chronic bronchitis. Dr. Kar was a national council and state secretariat member of the Communist Party of India and state general secretary and national vice-president of AITUC. He was 73 years old.


D Raja, General Secretary, CPI and Amarjeet Kaur, General Secretary AITUC expressed their deep sorrow and grief after hearing the sad news. Raja expressed condolences on behalf of the CPI National Council and Kaur paid her condolences on behalf of AITUC. Both the leaders said that he was a relentless fighter of the working class and we lost a great personality and crusader at this crucial juncture of the country conveyed and their condolences to the party state secretary and AITUC state secretary.


He was born in the Dharmasala block under Jajpur district in 1948. He served in Canara Bank, joined the AIBEA and was elected as the state president of All India Bank Employees Union, national vice-president of Canara Bank Employees Union and also the state president of AIBEA being a relentless fighter for the cause of the working class. He was an eminent writer and received Odisha Sahitya Academy award. He was also a columnist and contributed to different newspapers and magazines regularly.


Soon after hearing the news of his sad demise, the Red Flag over Bhagabati Bhavan, State Headquarters of CPI was lowered half mast, it will be kept for three days as a mark of respect to the departed leader.


He left behind his wife, one daughter and three sons. It is learnt from his family sources that his elder son Soubhagya Kar will come from Delhi to Bhubaneswar on 15th evening. His body will be brought to the CPI state office and AITUC office on 15th April for the party comrades to pay their last respects to the departed leader.
