The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement on December 19, 2019:
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India strongly condemns the anti-democratic and dictatorial attitude of police under the guidance of the central government. Scared of widespread discontent against the anti-constitutional and divisive CAA, the government declared 144 and arrested left leaders and activists assembled at Mandi House to demonstrate against CAA and proposed NRC as a part of nationwide protest call given by left parties.
CPI general secretary D. Raja, national council secretaries Pallab Sengupta, Dr. B.K. Kango, national executive member Annie Raja, Delhi state secretary Dinesh Varshney, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechuri, polit bureau members Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat were arrested along with others. Similarly demonstrators at Red Fort were also not allowed to protest by using heavy force. Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka governments have also declared 144 to clamp down demonstration.
CPI congratulates the people and activists who in spite of repression came out in big numbers to protest against anti-democratic and divisive designs of BJP.
