CPI Condemns Government’s Move to Handover Trains, Railway Stations to Private Sector
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement condemning the Modi government’s move for massive privatisation of Railways:
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India strongly condemns the move of the RSS-controlled BJP government led by Narendra Modi to resort to gradually for total privatization of Indian Railways. The Party notes with indignation the government’s decision to set up a task force in this regard.
Ignoring the opposition from our Party and other opposition parties, the government had already flagged off on October 4, the Lucknow-Delhi Tejas Express, the first private train to run on Indian Railways network by a non-railway operator.
The present move, as we understand, is aimed at handing over operations of as many as 150 trains and a total of 50 railway stations to private operators. The Indian Railways trains and railways stations will be handed over to private players in a time-bound manner.
A letter sent by Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant in this regard to chairman of Railway Board V K Yadav states that an empowered group will be constituted in order to “drive the process”. Other than Yadav and Kant, the Secretary of Department of Economic Affairs and Secretary under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will also be a part of the empowered group.
The Party feels that the present move is part of the Modi government’s move to sell off all public sector/ state sector enterprises to private sector.
We urge the central government to desist from such anti-national moves.
