CPI Decries Arrest of Two JNU Girl Students
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement today (on May 25, 2020):
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India strongly condemns the arrest of two girl students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who are also members of Pinjra Tod, a women’s rights collective, by Delhi police on May 23, 2020 in connection with the anti-CAA protest in Jafrabad area in February.
Devangana Kalita (30) and Natasha Narwal (32) were arrested from their homes in the evening under IPC sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty). The police did not give reasons to their family members for their arrest.
The continuing arrests of student activists, human rights and civil rights activists are really attacks on the Constitution and our democratic polity.
The Party while condemning such attacks appeals to the people to resist such repressive moves.
