CPI Decries Continuing Police Attacks on Protesters in Various States, Arrest of Binoy Viswam MP....
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement on December 21, 2019, condemning continuing attacks on protesters and arrest of Binoy Viswam MP, others:
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India strongly objects to the continuing attacks on the peaceful protesters by the police and the arrests of peaceful protesters in various places including the arrest of CPI national council secretary Binoy Viswam MP in Mangalore. The government in its desperation at the growing nationwide protests against CAA and NRC is using state machinery to suppress the protests. The Modi government has also let loose the police and para-military forces everywhere hoping in vain that they would succeed in suppressing the genuine agitators.
The Party while taking note of the arrest of scores of party members in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and other places warns the Modi government that arrests, firing and other atrocities by police will not succeed in quelling the protests. It is the height of arrogance that even journalists are not spared.
In Mangalore CPI volunteers ignoring the curfew led by Binoy Viswam and state secretary Saathi Sundaresh were arrested while they were peacefully shouting slogans against CAA, NRC in front of Gandhi statue in the city centre along with CPI’s flags. The protestors were holding the pictures of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Reports say that 69 party members were arrested in Uttar Pradesh, and scores in Manipur and other places.
The National Secretariat while condemning the attacks on peaceful protesters especially students including girls across the country once again urges the Modi government to repeal the CAA and give up the moves to bring in nationwide NRC. The party demands that police in Delhi and other states must refrain from filing cases against students.
