CPI Demands Unconditional Release of Manipur CPI State Secretary
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued a statement on December 23, 2019, strongly condemning both the arrest and re-arrest of Com L Sotinkumar, secretary of Manipur state council of the Party:
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India strongly condemns the arrest and re-arrest of Com L Sotinkumar, secretary of the Manipur state council of the Party, for taking a stand sharing and supporting the annoyance and anguish of the Manipur people in particular and of the people of the entire North-East in general over the CAA and move to bring in nationwide NRC. The Party wants to make it clear that no amount of aggressive suppression of the people’s resistance against the draconian law can cow down genuine protests.
Com Sotinkumar was rearrested by the Manipur Police on December 21 after the CJM Imphal West granted him bail. He was arrested from the CPI state council office in the afternoon of December 20 while he was addressing a meeting on the CAA-2019 for organising a successful and peaceful general strike on December 19 against the unconstitutional, communal and undemocratic CAA-2019 as a part of the All India protest of the Left Parties. He was produced in the CJM office of Imphal West by Manipur Police at 2 pm and was charged under numerous sections of the IPC.
The National Secretariat while condemning the arrest demands his immediate release unconditionally. The Party also demands to withdraw the cases filed against Com. Sotinkumar and a few other comrades, who led the protests.
