CPI Welcomes SC Verdict on CBI Chief
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement on January 8, 2019 welcoming the Supreme Court order on January 8, 2019 reinstating the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Alok Verma:
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India welcomes the Supreme Court verdict reinstating the Alok Verma as the CBI director, cancelling the government’s October order divesting him as the chief of the agency. The court in its order has stipulated that the selection committee must meet and discuss the issue and decide on Verma’s future within a week.
The apex court while pronouncing the judgment made it clear that it intends to protect and insulate the office of the CBI director as well as maintain the independence of the investigating agency. Therefore, the Party notes that the verdict is a slap on the face of RSS-controlled BJP government led by Narendra Modi.
The court also made it clear that the transfer of the director without the consent of the selection committee negates the legislative intent that is to ensure independence of CBI.
As Verma’s two-year tenure as CBI director ends on January 31, the Party wants that his tenure should be extended at least to cover the period of his forced leave.
It is known fact that the real issue is that the rift between Verma and his number two, Rakesh Asthana, both accusing each other of corruption. A CBI team had begun a criminal investigation against Asthana.
The apex court also set aside the Centre's decision to appoint senior IPS officer M Nageswara Rao, who was the joint director, as the interim chief of the agency.
It may be recalled here that Alok Verma was probing into the Rafale Deal.
