Punish the Guilty, Rush Compensation to Victims: CPI
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement today (on May 7, 2020) demanding adequate compensation for the families of the victims of Vishakhapatnam gas leak and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the tragic incident:
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India is deeply shocked to learn that there was the deadly gas leak at the LG Polymers plant in Vishakhapatnam. Over 11 people have died so far and around a thousand have been hospitalised. More deaths are likely according to hospital authorities.
The gas leak accident in LG Polymer Company, a South Korean company with its parent firm LG Chem, a chemical plant in Vishakhapatnam is engaged in making synthetic rubber and resin. This accident reminds us of the Bhopal gas leak tragedy.
The Party demands adequate compensation to the families of all the victims of the accident including the deceased ones. The Party demands that criminal cases must be filed against the company. There should also be a high level judicial inquiry and the role of Factories Inspection Department and Pollution Control Board should be questioned. Finally CPI wants the government to consider shifting of the factory to an exclusive industrial area.
