Bringing Statutory Resolution on Manipur Post-Midnight Is Deceiving the Parliament and the People

The move by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to introduce the statutory resolution on the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur after 2AM in the Lok Sabha raises serious questions about the government's commitment to addressing the crisis in Manipur.

The Parliament is in session since February, during which the opposition, including the Communist Party of India, has consistently called for a discussion on Manipur. The government's persistent avoidance of this critical issue, which had earlier resulted in the suspension of several opposition MPs, underscores a troubling pattern of evasion and suppression. This is another in a series of BJP’s deliberate attempts to avoid parliamentary scrutiny and render the Parliament ineffective and irrelevant.

The timing of the resolution's introduction—post-midnight—after an exhaustive debate on another contentious bill, suggests an attempt to minimise discussion and public attention. Such scheduling, and a mere 40 minutes discussion on this critical issue, not only undermines the gravity of the situation in Manipur but also reflects a lack of transparency and accountability on part of the BJP government.

The people of Manipur have endured significant hardship, and it is incumbent upon the government to prioritize their plight through open and earnest discussions in Parliament. By relegating this crucial resolution to the early hours of the morning, the government appears to be diminishing the importance of the crisis and its own responsibility in addressing it.

We urge the government to demonstrate genuine seriousness in resolving the issues in Manipur by facilitating timely and substantive debates, rather than resorting to tactics that evade accountability. The CPI demands that the government engage in extensive consultation with all political parties and stakeholders in the state for a meaningful resolution of the crisis. The citizens of Manipur, and indeed the entire nation, deserve a government with transparency, accountability and integrity.
