The Nonprofit Boards Role

Nonprofit boards are entrusted with a variety of duties. They may serve as the legal governing board of the organization. They also have the ability to ensure that the organization operates in accordance with local and state laws in addition to improving the organization’s exterior and internal operations, and maintain financial accountability. A nonprofit board must have members with diverse backgrounds and expertise to fulfill the diverse tasks.

Board members are also responsible for fundraising. This could include making contact with their networks of potential donors, or the list of previous donors to ask for donations. This may be uncomfortable at first, but it is a great way to improve your fundraising skills.

In addition the board could also designate committees to focus on specific responsibilities such as fundraising and budget management. The chairperson is usually the direct contact with the executive director. In addition, the treasurer should be familiar with all aspects of accounting and bookkeeping for the nonprofit. They should be available to provide information and advice to make sound financial decisions. The secretary records accurate and detailed meeting minutes.

The members of the board of directors of nonprofit organizations are also responsible to review all tax documents like the IRS Forms 990, before they are submitted annually. They must be familiar with all the tax regulations and rules for the organization. In addition, the board may be required to review and approve agreements, contracts or other documents relevant to the mission of the organization.
