We are herewith releasing the text of the letter written by Communist Party of India General Secretary D Raja to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin

On behalf of the CPI, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you and the DMK government on your decision to install a statue of Karl Marx in Chennai. This tribute to one of the world’s most influential philosopher, who not only interpreted the world but also showed the way to change it, is also a proud reaffirmation of Tamil Nadu’s deep-rooted commitment to justice, equality and rationalism. Karl Marx’s was one of revolutionary contributions to political economy and the critique of exploitation continue to guide struggles for a more humane world. His vision — of a society free from class divisions and built on solidarity — has inspired generations across the globe. In honoring Marx, your government is honoring not just a philosopher, but the timeless principles of equality and collective emancipation.

Tamil Nadu has long nurtured these ideals. From Comrade Singaravelar, South India’s first communist who organized the first May Day in India, to Comrade P. Jeevanandham, who linked Marxist thought with Tamil identity and social reform — the Marxist movement in the state has always walked hand-in-hand with the Dravidian movement. As Jeevanandham once said, “We are not just fighting for food and wages. We are fighting for dignity, self-respect and the liberation of the mind from superstition.” This perfectly captures the shared moral and political compass of Marxist and Dravidian ideologies. Leaders like Thanthai Periyar, Arignar Anna and Kalaignar Karunanidhi found common cause with Communists in challenging caste, superstition and social inequality. This unity of purpose and vision has given Tamil Nadu its enduring progressive character — rooted in resistance, rationalism and compassion.

At a time when divisive forces seek to polarize our society and rewrite history with malice, your decision stands out as a reaffirmation of unity, justice and and the symbiotic relationship between Marxist and Dravidian ideologies. The statue of Karl Marx will serve as a lasting symbol of solidarity — a reminder that the path to equality is built not on hatred, but on shared struggles and common dreams.  May the statue serve not just as a symbol, but an inspiration for our common fight against class exploitation, caste discrimination and patriarchal subjugation. I once again commend your leadership for this step.

With revolutionary greetings,
