The Communist Party of India (CPI) strongly condemns the unilateral decision of the United States to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods as a punitive measure for India’s purchase of oil from Russia. This action is an outright violation of the sovereign right of our country to conduct independent trade and business with nations of its choice, based on its national interest and economic needs.
The CPI urges the Government of India not to succumb to such coercive tactics from Washington. India must explore alternative arrangements to safeguard our industries, protect workers, and ensure energy security without compromising the dignity and independence of our foreign policy. The attempt of the U.S. to dictate India’s trade relations sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the principle of multipolarity and the right of all countries to free and fair economic engagement.
The Party also calls upon the Government of India to come clean on the controversial statement made by former U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday, in which he claimed to have “stopped the conflict” between India and Pakistan. Such remarks raise serious questions about India’s foreign policy conduct and its sovereign decision-making processes. The government must clarify to the people whether these claims have any basis, and ensure that India’s strategic autonomy is never compromised before U.S. pressure.
At a time when India faces mounting external pressures, the CPI reiterates that safeguarding national interests lies in pursuing an independent foreign policy, strengthening ties with developing countries, resisting imperialist diktats, and ensuring that the burden of such economic and political pressures does not fall upon the working people of our country.
