The Communist Party of India expresses its shock and sorrow over the unprecedented tragedy that has befallen on the people of Wayanad, Kerala. In a series of landslides following heavy rains, villages, towns and habitats in the region saw unprecedented destruction. Many villages have been cut-off from roads and houses in some areas entirely wiped out.
The death toll has crossed 100 already and unfortunately, it is likely to rise further. In this situation, the Communist Party of India expresses its complete solidarity with the people of Kerala and Wayanad who are at the receiving end of this crisis. CPI urges its cadres in nearby areas to devote themselves to relief work.
While the state government has started relief and rescue operation, the CPI urges the Union Government to declare the Wayanad landslides as national disaster and extend all possible help including required funds from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). Personnel from the armed forces and National Disaster Response Forces must be deployed in large numbers in coordination with the state government.
